How Much Does a New Garage Door Cost?

A new garage door with professional installation typically runs $1,500 to $3,350 once you include the door itself, a new opener, and labor. Size is the first thing that moves the number: single-car doors average $2,171 (range $844–$3,498), while double-car doors average $3,478 (range $2,435–$4,522).

Choosing the Right Opener for Your Door

Heavier doors — double-car, insulated, or anything over roughly 200 lbs — need 3/4 HP for smooth, reliable operation. Wood carriage-style or oversized custom doors are usually best matched to a full 1 HP chain-drive unit.

Drive type is a separate decision from horsepower:

• Chain drive — the most affordable and durable option, using a metal chain to move the door. Reliable for heavy doors, but the noisiest of the three.
• Belt drive — uses a rubber belt instead of a chain, running much quieter. Worth the upgrade if the garage sits under or next to a bedroom.
• Screw drive — a threaded steel rod splits the difference: quieter than chain, less maintenance than belt, and available across a range of horsepower ratings.

Getting the pairing wrong in either direction causes problems — an underpowered opener straining on a heavy door burns out early, while an oversized motor on a light door can be rougher on the hardware than it needs to be.
